Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program

A Mindfulness based approach to Stress Reduction and Stress Management

This program is designed to teach mind and body awareness techniques to help live with physical or psychological symptoms due to stress, pain, or illness.  It is based on the methods of Jon Kabat-Zinn Ph.D., at the UMass. Medical Center and was also featured on the Bill Moyers’ special, “Healing and the Mind.”
Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating non-judgmental awareness in day-to-day life.  Mindfulness develops the potential to experience each moment, no matter how difficult or intense, with serenity and clarity.  Meditation can help you feel better, sleep better, increase your ability to cope with stressful situations, improve self-esteem, increase happiness, enhance productivity, and renew enthusiasm for life and work.
You can feel more alive and joyful and gain immediate access to powerful inner resources for health and healing.

  2. Participants meet for two and a half hours once a week and there is an all-day session in the sixth week.
  3. Participants practice with a 30 minute CD daily (mindfulness meditation or mindful yoga).
  4. Reading the course text: Full Catastrophe Living, by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. and A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook by Bob Stahl Ph.D.

Course Content: Each session will contain three components:
Experiential
The experiential component takes place in the first one-and-a-half hours.  It consists of forty-five minute instructional sitting exercises and a thirty minute mindful movement of yoga or walking.  The object is to develop non-judgmental moment-to-moment awareness of the relationship between the body and mind and to acknowledge the physical sensations and mental or emotional feeling as they arise.
Didactic
Through lectures and discussions, participants learn how habitual reactions to stress create anxiety, depression, and illness and learn how to change their response to stress.
Group Support

The last hour is for group support.  There will be time for personal sharing and questions.  Each person will have an opportunity to discuss their daily practice.
