Mindfulness in Preschools Program

We are working diligently to bridge the gaps and severe disparities in education, health and overall well-being in Silicon Valley. The SF Bay Area is one of the most affluent in the world, yet many families here live below the poverty line and endure violence and trauma as frequent experiences. This is the case for many communities in East Palo Alto, East Menlo Park, and Redwood City.

Mindfulness and yoga teachers are offering skills and training in Spanish because most of the families are Hispanic and can benefit more from connecting with their native language. The teachers are representative of the population allowing the learners to "see" themselves in positive and uplifting roles. We know this to be extremely powerful! The impact is already being noticed by the teachers, staff and families. “It’s working!” –exclaims preschool teacher in East Palo Alto. She went on to say that they love the classes in Spanish and that everyone is already benefiting from the skills being learned.

We are creating systemic change in these communities that is healing generational trauma and breaking cycles of violence. We are providing new messages for underserved communities – “You are important. You are worthy. We do care!”. Through history, these positive messages have been lacking. For example, East Palo Alto is only 3 miles from Stanford University, yet the education and health conditions are thousands of miles apart. Why is this? There are many reasons, one that the history of East Palo Alto includes being the homeland to many of the minority servants and workers of the affluent staff and professors of the university. There was unequal treatment and unequal access to resources. Though many of the outward structures have changed, there still exist mental structures and attitudes that are slow to evolve. The good new is that we can change this.

Our program is grounded in research in mindfulness, neuroscience, and positive psychology, Plus we listen to the needs of the community and work together to develop effective and beneficial curriculum for the schools.

Happiness and peace are not things that are deserved only by the rich and affluent. We are all responsible for the state of our communities and our world. Every child is important and needs to know it. Systemic change must involve parent education too. With these new skills, children, families and communities can create happier, more meaningful lives. Please help us in promoting resilience and self-regulation by making happiness accessible to everyone!
